The discoverer of fuchsias, that have become one of the symbols of Castle Buchlovice
was a Franciscan monk and botanist Charles Plumier (1646-1704), which was sent by French King Louis XIV. for a scientific expedition to South America to find new plants and animals. The new plant, found on the American continent, Plumier described it in his famous book, Nova Genera Plantarum Americanarum and called it Fuchsia triphylla flore coccinea (Fuchsia - three-leaf plant with a red bloom), flower got it's name by the German humanist professor of botany and medicine at the University of Tübingen Leonard Fuchs. Into the Europe, specifically into the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, Captan Firth brought up the fuchsia in 1788, shortly after that was there was its expansion into aristocratic gardens. Commercial potential of fuchsia increased the interest of the place of origin, where were discovered several other species at the beginning of the 19th century. Since 1825 there was a planned breeding of species and expansion of popular plants throughout Europe began. Enthusiasm for the fuchsia was considerable, in the 20th century growers associationsbegan to emerge around the world, whose members contributed by the selective breeding in range of further expansion.
Fuchsia was brought to Buchlovice after comparative tests with the global range in Pruhonice in 1970. Ingenous 350 varieties were subsequently revised and suplemented by an expert ad colletor Mr. Jiřím Mrázem from Belčice. Thanks to him and longtime head of the castle garden Pavel Vlášek and excellent expert Pavel Talich, the castle collection has approximately 1200 varieties and among to the largest and the most famous collections of fuchsias in Central Europe. Since 1982, the fuchsia exhibition is accesible for visitors in the summer; visitors can tour the castle and beside can go to the park and buy a fuchsia by the help from the expert. Chateau also offers lot of other plants, those should not be missing in every equipment of every Chateau's garden.
